Narrative Technique

Frame Story

A frame story is a narrative that encloses, introduces, or provides a context for another story or set of stories.

A frame story creates an outer narrative situation in which one or more inner stories are told. The frame can explain who tells those stories, why they are told, and how readers should understand them.

During a delayed voyage, five passengers tell stories while the captain records their changing accounts.
The voyage supplies an outer situation that contains and contextualizes the passengers' inner stories.
